Hair transplant, treatment for baldness

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

a specific hair transplant technique

For those who have baldness problems, hair restoration can be done with permanent hair transplant technique called “Follicular Unit Excision” which also known as “FUE”. This technique was invented since 1980s. It involves harvesting individual follicular units on the back of the head which is less affected by DHT hormone (DHT hormone is the major contributor of baldness and hair loss). The obtained follicular units are then implanted at the desired area. This method can be used in people of all ages.

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

A hair transplant technique with less recovery period without affecting daily life

Hair transplantation is another treatment option for people with hair loss problems to regain their confidence. Currently, one of the permanent hair transplant techniques that has been developed and become widely accepted and popular is FUE. The process begins with harvesting and selecting only healthy hair follicles from occipital area which is less affected by DHT hormone. In this technique, the excision of long strip of scalp is not required unlike the traditional FUT hair transplant method.

FUE hair transplant procedure

Step 1: Preparing for hair transplantation

New hairline is designed with consideration of the balance of the face shape, age, gender and personality as well as the needs of the patient. The recipient area is determined by considering the balance and hair restoration of the donor occipital area for natural and best-looking result. After the number of grafts are determined, the occipital hair will be shaved short to make it easier to extract healthy hair follicles from the back of the head to the recipient area.

Step 2: Excision of hair follicle cells

The surgeon will inject your scalp with local anesthesia. Then a punch tool with fine tip of 1 mm diameter is used to penetrate and remove hair grafts which requires precision and thoroughness in the selection of only hair grafts while being careful in order to avoid damage to hair follicles.

Step 3: Making incisions for hair transplant

Then the surgeon will inject the recipient area with local anesthesia and make minuscule incisions by a tiny needle. After that, the grafts are then inserted as deep as possible using the small pointed-tip forceps, like new hair follicle transplantation. This step requires the expertise and experience of the surgeon, since it requires meticulousness in arrangement of hairline in order to provide thicker hair as natural as original hair of patient, while the surgeon must work as fast as possible to maintain the quality of the hair follicles with less recovery period.

Step 4: Wound closure and self-care advice from doctors

After completion of the hair transplant process, which takes approximately 4-6 hours or more, depending on the amount of implanted hair grafts, the surgeon assistants will clean and close the wounds and put on a hat for the patient to protect the implanted hair grafts on first day. Patient must visit the doctor again the next day for wound cleaning and the treatment process is completed. Patient must visit the doctor by appointment for follow up during the first year.
